While playing cards in the family room, a dog barked. This would have made sense if there was actually a dog there. The Smith family paused for a moment, looking for the dog though it was not there.
The next morning the youngest daughter, Jane, told her father that she had heard the dog bark again in the room last night. So, the brave old man decided to carry out an experiment according to his beliefs.
While sitting in Jane's room reading her a bed time story, he recorded the following events. Just as he was finishing the story and giving up hope, the 'dog' came in and started barking. Nobody moved, until old Mr Smith challenged it to speak English.
"Say my name! I know you can talk, now say my name!" The dog did not oblige and just barked again. "Say my name, Dr Smith!!"
A long pause, and then "Dr Smith" said the poltergeist through his daughter in an unhuman voice. Cold hands gripped her body as she began to levitate around the room. Jane's voice changed dramatically from a childs voice to that of an old man. "I died in this room, in a chair in that corner" the poltergeist spoke, pointing at the corner and levitated there. "My head hurt, it sent my body into a fit. I died alone with no family around for me." Jane suddenly stared at her father in such horror of what was happening to her before dropping to the ground, dead.
